Hi there. Kayla here. Here’s a short sum-up of what I do and what makes me tick:
I’m a graphic art major out of Dominican University of California. I’m rather obsessed with design thinking, with layout design and branding among my favorites. I also discovered a fondness for printmaking, which I centered my thesis around.
Post-BFA, I joined the world of full-time artists in the corporate sector. It was during this time that I realized there was something more that I wanted to explore: user experience design.
I made the decision to pursue a master’s in Interactive Design at the Academy of Art University, and have been lucky to broaden my knowledge in areas such as UX/UI design, coding, and animation. I love the psychological aspects behind UX design, and I find it to be a fantastic meld between my artistic and scientific side.
Outside of computers and ink, I love to woodwork, paint, and sew. I have Macgyver-like skills when it comes to figuring out how things work as well as how to replicate them, and I haven’t met a puzzle I’m too intimidated to tackle.
I’m also a giant nerd. I love to talk about video games and D&D and the latest scientific discoveries. I have a soft spot for trench coats and underdogs and am a self-proclaimed plot junkie. My favorite forms of stress relief involve creating fantastical stories in faraway lands and beating up bad guys in video games.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever made?
During the pandemic, a friend posted about making an indie tabletop role-playing game, and I asked if they needed help with layout. What started as a one-off game has now become a passion project that allows me to blend my tabletop gaming and artistic sides.
My favorite thing we’ve made to date is a 56-page adventure that combines Moby Dick and Dante’s Inferno, called Hellwhalers. It has been amazingly well received by the community and has pushed our little team into the ranks of published indie authors.
What’s something you’ve made that has left an impact?
Another pandemic project; during the early lockdown stages I joined a local group of sewists who were making reusable PPE for overwhelmed hospitals. The gowns that I made in my childhood bedroom ended up going to New York, Massachusets, California, and Jamaica.
I enjoy working with people who …
Really love what they do. I enjoy being around other people who are passionate about what they do, and I find that it helps motivate me in the workplace.
I like to think about problems that are …
Nebulous. Half of the fun of solving design problems is figuring out exactly what the problem is.
